Spanish is taught from Year 1 to Year 6. In Year 1, the children are introduced to the new language in an engaging manner to develop their curiosity and confidence.
Languages education at Hawkes Farm Academy aims to foster an appreciation for cultural diversity and promote intercultural understanding through the engagement of authentic materials, such as songs, poems, and cultural traditions. We aim to enrich the personal development of all pupils and equip them with the emotional intelligence and cross-cultural competencies that are vital for thriving in a multicultural world.
As novice learners, pupils will focus on the fundamental building blocks of language acquisition: phonics, vocabulary, and grammar. They will prioritise listening and speaking initially before progressing to reading and writing. By using high-utility vocabulary, pupils will learn to construct coherent sentences. Our curriculum is aspirational yet accessible, providing a clear and structured pathway that aligns with the English National Curriculum's Key Stage 2 framework and will support pupils in building a foundation on which their knowledge of languages can be developed further at the secondary level.
This approach nurtures curiosity, resilience, and a love for languages, ensuring that all pupils, regardless of background, have the required starting point to succeed in further language study and confidently navigate an interconnected world.
